5 Terms Rolex Collectors Need To Know!

“Speaking Rolex” can be tough as a new watch collector or enthusiast – here are 5 terms you need to know.

September 30, 2020

Today, we’re diving into five more Rolex terms that you need to know to become a more educated consumer of the brand!

1 – King Midas – designed and released in 1964, the watch is a part of the Cellini line. It’s the brands dressiest line, and lack most of the sporty elements that make Rolex so well known. In many ways, it was ahead of its time, reflecting the design of, say, Piaget’s Polo, trying to design a sporty watch that was still precious.

2 – Underline Dial – though this is totally a minutiae sort of thing, it’s a thin, horizontal line near the text found in the early 1960s that was used by Rolex to mark the watches that no longer used Radium as their luminous material.

3 – Stella Dial – Very colorful dials made in the 1970s mostly for Day-Dates, with unique colors and textures (a glossy enamel lacquer) that is so unique compared to other Rolex dial textures at the time.

4 – Rivet Bracelet – A first generation Rolex Oyster Bracelet, using rivets to cover the folded links on the bracelet. Oris and Tudor now both use rivet style bracelets in their modern line, though these are purely for aesthetic reasons and not functional ones, as they were for Rolex originally.

5 – Padellone – A rare but popular vintage Rolex form 1949-1952 that featured a triple calendar complication and a moonphase. The name comes from the Italian word for frying pan, given that it measures in at 38mm in diameter which is huge for the time.
