In this week’s episode of ASKTNH LIVE, Christian tackles the hardest hitting questions of the week from the watchfam over on our Instagram (@theoandharris, wink wink).
Our first question comes from a watch geek who wants to hear some affordable alternatives to the Cartier Tank. As Christian points out, there is one major flaw with the Tank, and that’s that the design is so particular that in order to properly embody the same kind of vibe, you have to go with a homage. Luckily, Seiko and Tissot (vintage Tissot, anyway) produce some incredible options. He also suggests a quartz Frederique Constant that, although not a rectangular case, certainly captures much of the aesthetic and, for $200, it’s hard to go wrong.
From there, we take a quick side trip off of Cartier Lane and onto Clooney Road, where Christian addresses the difference between press photos of someone wearing a watch, and seeing them wear that same watch in their day to day life. For George Clooney to wear an Omega during a photo shoot in Manhattan is no big deal, but for him to wear the same watch to his wedding speaks far more about his respect and adoration for the brand. Marketing like that is what sells watches, not press shots.
Finally, we get back to Cartier Lane for a bit of a mini #RANT&H, in which Christian absolutely obliterates the newest addition to the Cartier line-up this past SIHH – the new Crash Watch. While the watch certainly isn’t everyone’s taste, neither is the new price tag: a whopping $40k for a watch that, though limited, runs the same movement as can be found in several $10k Cartier watches, and no amount of “R&D” costs can possibly justify a 4x price hike. Shame on you, Cartier.
