John Legend is a certifiable super star in every sense of the word. He is a musician and songwriter with a ton of respect behind him, and is arguably one of the most talented dudes on Earth. He’s also one of the coaches on the biggest singing competition show, The Voice, and through all of these displays of his stardom, one thing is entirely clear: John Legend is an AP junkie, and specifically a Royal Oak junkie.
His collection is primarily Royal Oaks, with a couple of exceptions, one of which is a collaboration between Audemars Piguet and John himself, a Millenary that is designed to embody the design of a piano on the dial, in keeping with John’s skills as a pianist. The crazy thing, of course, is that he is actually an AP ambassador. And yet, nobody seems to know it.
The major reason is that AP hasn’t actually pushed that hard to make the connection between John and the brand a visible one. There is no real content showing John integrating the brand into his life, Mr. Porter style. Audemars Piguet has clearly put in some marketing dollars behind this partnership, but it seems like they’re just hoping that the image of him wearing a watch will sell people on the brand. Spoiler alert: probably not.
So what would we recommend? The AP Openwork Royal Oak, a watch with a skeleton dial that has been finished to an absurd level. It’s truly peak horological execution, and it’s the kind of thing that would suit John perfectly.
