Karl Lagerfeld was one of the most revered designers in the world (or something like that…nobody’s quite sure what he actually did for Chanel when he was there). After his passing earlier this year, the world began to rally around his accomplishments and genius, and naturally, the watch world did what they did best – they remembered his watch.
The watch is a piece unique Audemars Piguet A-Series Royal Oak, but one that is entirely black PVD coated. A PVD coated watch is not inherently interesting in its own right, but a PVD coated Royal Oak very much is. It’s widely accepted that Audemars Piguet did not black out the watch in-house, but rather in Italy, by some aftermarket finisher. What is impressive about all of this, though, is the fact that he was STILL seen wearing the watch some almost 50 years later, in a world where people similar to him in success would hardly be seen wearing the same pair of shoes more than once. And that, arguably, says more about the man than any pithy quote about his contributions to fashion ever could.
