In this week’s episode of RANT&H, Christian dives into Jay-Z’s newest addition to his already impressive watch collection – a potentially “fake” Rolex Perpetual Calendar.
Okay, so first thing’s first: Jay is a serious watch collector. He’s not shy about it, and in between very flashy, shiny yellow gold Rolexes and Pateks are some very refined offerings from brands like JLC. Whether or not he’s into watches because he hemorrhages money and started running out of things to spend it on is another matter entirely, but what does matter is his newest piece: a Rolex Perpetual Calendar with a dial and movement modified by Franck Muller.
So yes, Rolex never produced a perpetual calendar, but this particular model was basically rebuilt from the ground up by a then unknown Mr. Muller, who’d yet to make his stamp on the world of horology. For Jay-Z, someone who can hardly go buy a cup of coffee without forty journalists breathing down his neck, to wear this piece to the Grammy’s, no less, is kind of incredible. Sure, it’s not original, but as far as I’m concerned, that doesn’t quite make it a fake, either.
