Seiko is re-releasing one of the most unknown and yet incredibly famous production models, colloquially known as the “Steve Jobs watch.” On the surface, this release is a retail slam dunk and I have no doubt that the nearly 2,000 being made will sell out quickly. But what I find more interesting, is the small business opportunity that is this classic, quartz Seiko. Being that it is being reintroduced on a limited run, there will be tens of thousands of people that, despite their desire to own one, will be unable. The marketing narrative here goes far beyond watches. The appeal is in his watch’s significance in American and global technological history. Long story short, if Joe Schmoe can create a clone watch and market the shit out of it, he’s got a remarkable opportunity to make an absolute ton of money.
