FROM THE CURATOR
What started with a simple “Normale” Tank, a gold wristwatch inspired by the Renault tanks of the first world war, has grown into one of the world’s most renowned manufacturers. Cartier, La Maison, has never ceased to deliver new, brilliant and always precious designs…this being a prime example.
One of the most unique designs to come from La Maison is this, the Cabriolet Reversible (later becoming known as the Basculante). Released in its first iteration in the 1930s, it featured the ability to flip over itself on the vertical plane from 12 to 6 o’clock. Like Jaeger LeCoultre’s Reverso, it shocked the world.
This piece, a descendent of that original Cabriolet Reversible, is stunning. A blend between classic Cartier design and 1970’s style, it’s a bold piece… a beautiful and traditional response to the Quartz Crisis.
While manufactured in very small quantities, the Cartier “Reverso” was famously worn by French actor Alain Delon, which has made this seldom seen Cartier all the more iconic and elusive in collectors circles.
And of course, it comes complete with a certificate of authenticity and appraisal and is shipped carefully and fully insured via UPS expedited service.
