Omega Speedmaster “Speedy Tuesday”
I love the Speedmaster. I’ve made that clear. And this is, in my opinion, one of the best on the market. Why? It’s from the 2017 production of “Speedy Tuesday” Speedmasters. Its standard 42mm diameter and 20mm lug size features a reverse panda dial – black dial with white, luminescent registers – which feature radial finishing and a looser, more playful numbering system. Each watch is powered by the venerable 1861 movement. But it’s doesn’t end there – in fact, those improvements, on their own, add little to the value of the watch. It’s the rarity of these Omegas that makes them so desirable. Each watch is one of 2012 pieces – cool right?
So what does Speedy Tuesday represent? It’s a foundational piece to the evolution of the watch world and the watch geek community. #SpeedyTuesday is one of the first popular hashtags, and one that has led to the global appreciation for the Moon Watch. Since 2012, the hashtag has cultivated a devoted following of watch fans that on Tuesdays, praise the Speedmaster. I know it sounds like a stretch but do you really think the Speedmaster would be what it is today without speedy Tuesday – without its weekly promotion on Instagram? I certainly don’t think so. And based on this move, neither does Omega – who responded with this – a limited edition series inspired by a ’78 version of the Speedmaster, the Alaska Project, originally created for NASA. They made 2012 pieces – commemorating the hashtag’s birth year.
The coolest element of this watch is that it is, genuinely, an appreciation of Speedy fans. While it isn’t by any means inexpensive, these watches signify a direct response by Omega to its sincerely attentive and communicative fanbase. It’s a chance for fans to own a limited piece, created specifically to honor a movement that they actively engage in. This watch certainly is more than it’s specs. And let’s face it – the specs alone are pretty damn cool.
It comes with its original box, Speedy Tuesday leather watch roll, spring bar tool, Striped Nato strap, and cards.
