FROM THE CURATOR
It’s rare enough to find condition like this, but the fact that this example has retained its box and papers just blows me away. Meet the Rolex Explorer II Ref. 16570, a direct descendant of the 1655, the Steve McQueen. Defined by its rough, raw steel stationary bezel and red GMT hand – it’s built for the jet set thrill seeker.
It’s aptly named, too. There is probably no better piece to scale a cliff, wander a cave and jump into the waves when its all done. The Explorer is classically Rolex and yet unmistakable, substantial and still understated – it’s probably the most under priced Rolex on the modern market. And this example, with its unpolished case, original bracelet and polar white dial is terrific.
ABOUT THE BRAND
Rolex is arguably the most famous brand in the world when it comes to luxury timepieces. Their brand equity is through the roof, and you’d be hard pressed to find another luxury watchmaker who can make watch geeks and non-geeks alike incredibly stoked. Their quality is second to none, and it makes sense that until this day, when someone thinks about James Bond, Magnum P.I. or Glengarry Glen Ross, they think of Rolex.
