FROM THE CURATOR
While now synonymous with the date function, the convenient complication wasn’t introduced into the Submariner until 1969. It was this reference, the 1680, that proved the success of the new vision of Rolex’s champion sports watch.
This piece, which dates to 1978, is a great example of the reference. From its old-world Oyster case (examine the listing photos to admire the chamfers on each lug), to its tritium pearl and brushed silver date wheel, it’s lovely in its detail.
It’s original dial was damaged (likely in the late 70’s or early 80’s) but luckily, Rolex used a beautiful matte service dial, which has developed a lovely eggshell patina. It’s important to note that the single difference between these particular service dials and the watches originals are the open 6’s in the depth rating.
It has been a pleasure owning this 1680 and, if you’d like to see it on the wrist, enjoy this video.
And of course, it comes complete with a certificate of authenticity and appraisal and is shipped carefully and fully insured via UPS expedited service.
ABOUT THE BRAND
Rolex is arguably the most famous brand in the world when it comes to luxury timepieces. Their brand equity is through the roof, and you’d be hard pressed to find another luxury watchmaker who can make watch geeks and non-geeks alike incredibly stoked. Their quality is second to none, and it makes sense that until this day, when someone thinks about James Bond, Magnum P.I. or Glengarry Glen Ross, they think of Rolex.
