TAG Heuer has released their Connected 45, the newest of their uniquely luxurious smart watches.

Since its introduction in 2015, the Connected series from TAG Heuer has been an important bridge between traditional watchmakers and the looming threat of the smartwatch movement. While the platform for their watches has always been the standard Android Wear/Google OS, the level of finishing, attention to design and luxury experience have been a major focus, making them a go-to source for an expensive smartwatch, though It’s unclear how large that market is.

The case, as the name suggests, is 45mm in diameter, which is big for a traditional watch, but on par with other Google powered smartwatches. It makes sense, really, since the display needs to be not only readable, but also easy enough to interact with via touch. The smaller the screen, the more likely you are to open the Messenger app when you meant to open your calendar. Speaking as someone who does that on even a fairly large smartphone, there is certainly function in display size.

This large steel case is finished to the standard we’ve come to expect from TAG, which is certainly to a higher bar than many other smartwatches on the market. A mixture of brushed and polished surfaces give it a sporty, but still relatively versatile edge — as versatile as smartwatches get, of course.

The strap is a straightforward black rubber, seen on many of the more modern-designed Carrera models, the case of which the Connected series is loosely based on. It features a steel deployant clasp with a minder system to keep excess strap length from sticking out the back end.

The Damage

The TAG Heuer Connected 45 retails for $1,800.

The Take

I dont like smart watches, but that’s immaterial. The Connected series is well executed and, if it sells, or even successfully attracts a new group of clients to the brand, then that’s terrific.

I’m interested to see where Tag Heuer’s pursuit of technological advancement in the watch industry leads them. What will watches be like in 10 years? Will some level of smart technology be on the wrist of every watch wearer? Will Tag continue to be the biggest player in the space? And if so, will their Heritage line be a fading memory?
