You Need To See This Watch: Reviewing The Grand Seiko Superman SBGH281

Reviewing one of the newest Grand Seiko releases, the Limited Edition SBGH281, the “Superman.”

July 01, 2020

The watch is being released as part of Grand Seiko’s massive 60th Birthday Celebration. It all started in December of 1960, when the original Grand Seiko was released into the world, and 60 years later, the brand is celebrating the complex and mystifying journey that got them to where they are today.

The SBGH281 is cased in the iconic 44GS style case, a persistent icon in the brand’s line, and one so important to its heritage, it couldn’t avoid being involved in celebrating their 60th Birthday. Powering the watch is the Caliber 9S85, an in-house, high-beat automatic caliber accurate to +5, -3 seconds per day. It beats away at 36,000 vph, 10 beats per second. The mainspring, in order to maintain the level of energy needed to power a high-beat movement like this is a whole new alloy, SPRON 530, while the hairspring is constructed of SPRON 610.

The hands and markers are treated in typical Grand Seiko fashion, and are thus exceptional to behold. The dial is a beautifully rich blue, with a golden GS logo and red seconds hand to symbolize the sunrise.
