Introducing the Timex M79 Automatic, The Batman
This watch raises some interesting thoughts not only on the state of Timex, but of the watch market as we know it.

It was a funky, retro design with a Pepsi bezel and a highly unique bracelet, all for about $200. They sold out in a flash, and have been commanding significant premiums on the secondhand market ever since. Now, Timex is bringing the design back once again, only this time, they stepped things up. And yes, they’re sold out. |

The M79 features the same case, bracelet and dial design as its predecessor. The two most significant changes are the dimensions and movement. The M79 measures 40mm, where the Q came in at 38mm, making this newer model more modern, sporty and appealing to the mass-market.
The new release, unlike the Q, is powered by an automatic movement. Though Timex hasn’t specified which automatic movement, I’d bet the M79 will be powered by the Miyota 8205, a day-date automatic movement from the same movement family as the 8215 used in their Marlin automatic.
The Damage
During its short-lived run on the Timex site, the watch retailed for $279.
The Take
This watch raises some interesting thoughts not only on the state of Timex, but of the watch market as we know it. We are watching, in real time, the resurgence of one of the most famous watch manufacturers in American history, and through pieces that, for now, almost exclusively pay umbrage to their history and legacy – a common practice in the market today.
But as vintage as the watches might be, the brand’s strategy in launching these pieces is very modern, Supreme-esque. They’ve created both a market and an aftermarket, a culture of high pressure retail – a “buy it now or never” environment. Will Timex be able to replicate what they’ve created with the Q and the M79? I don’t know. But, as an enthusiast that praises the $200 price point as just pure fun, I hope not.
